Race

Clean energy

‘The ZERO’ will generate popular enthusiasm for the use of zero emission energy and challenge the environmental standards being set for the vehicles of the future. The teams are required to produce their own renewable energy for the race.

The amount of energy required to fill up the vehicles during the way from the grid will be produced by alternative energies like solar, wind, geothermal etc. and fed into the grid. The countdown to The ZERO has already begun. The race will start in June 2010. Over 80 days, the vehicles will travel across three continents and through some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes.

Competition criteria

Scientists with expertise in renewable energy and transport issues will define the competition’s parameters. Apart from who’s ‘first past the post’, the performance of the different teams will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Popularity (opinion polls by people/spectators along the way)
  • Reliability (judged on numbers of breakdowns)
  • Affordability, efficiency, overall energy consumption (judged by car manufacturers)
  • Design and sex-appeal (judged by the public)
  • Power: speed, acceleration and range (judged by a panel of racing car drivers)
  • Safety (judged by engineers)

For each of the 6 competition criteria there will be a prize-giving event in a major city on every continent. There will be a winner in each category and one overall winner.
